TASMANIAN spinner Xavier Doherty has been axed from the national one-day and Twenty20 squads, with selectors promoting leg-spinner Fawad Ahmed for his Australian debut for the latest limited overs component of the UK tour.
Doherty has paid the price for an unsuccessful Champions Trophy campaign.
The 30-year-old left-arm spinner from George Town was overlooked for the opening game against England, and subsequently managed just one wicket against New Zealand and Sri Lanka at an average of 34 from just 11 overs.
National selector John Inverarity said that while Doherty would be disappointed ``He remains in strong contention for selection for the tour of India in October''.
Fellow Northern Tasmanians T20 skipper and ODI vice-captain George Bailey and James Faulkner have been included.
As well, Pakistan-born Ahmed, who was the second highest wicket-taker on the first-class section of Australia A's tour of South Africa, the slow bowling responsibilities will fall to Glenn Maxwell's off-spin, Steve Smith's leg-spin and Adam Voges's left-armers.
Other notable inclusions are batsmen Shaun Marsh and Aaron Finch and paceman Josh Hazlewood.
Selectors have named an 18-man squad, which will be trimmed following the two T20s against England on August 29 and August 31.
There will also be five ODIs against England and an ODI against Scotland as part of the tour.
