NORTH Launceston footballer Jake Sushames was the only Tasmanian player selected in the 2013-14, 61-member AIS- AFL Academy squad this week.
The 15-year-old St Helens grade 10 student represented Tasmania at the national under-16 championships this year.
He was picked in the level 1 squad, which will be coached by AFL engagement and talent co- ordinator Chris Johnson.
North Launceston coach Zane Littlejohn said it was fantastic for Sushames and the club for him to be the only Tasmanian picked.
"It was exciting that Jake wanted to play football for North Lonnie when we approached him," Littlejohn said.
"He is very elusive and is capable of taking mark of the year and kick goal of the year in the one game.
"He normally plays half- forward or wing for us and has also played in the backline this year and we've used that time to teach him."
National and international talent manager Kevin Sheehan said the academy program prepared players for the rigours of AFL football.
"The players will experience elite training and mentoring that will help their development both on and off the field," Sheehan said.
