NEWSTEAD College will soon take Launceston audiences to a place that nobody dared to go, with a love that came to be known, called Xanadu.
The 1980 film achieved both cult status and derision so the college has sought to adapt its 2007 broadway offshoot to inject a little hilarity and irreverence into the original script.
Year 11 student Maggie Campbell plays Kira, a Greek muse who descends from Mount Olympus to inspire artist Sonny Malone to develop California's first roller disco.
Miss Campbell said the school's production was quite removed from the kitsch film although gave it a nod through '80s-style dance and sounds.
The show features a cast of 60 supported by about 40 backstage crew members.
A nine-piece band with six backing vocalists will perform 14 Electric Light Orchestra songs, from the film's soundtrack and its back catalogue.
Xanadu runs from Thursday, August 22, to Saturday, August 24.
Tickets are available from the Princess Theatre box office on 63233666 or visit theatrenorth.com.au/ xanadu.
