Tullochs Auctions in Launceston is selling the trap, which is in working order, through expressions of interest.
Tullochs Auctions director Scott Millen said the company had put an approximate price tag of $20,000 on the item.
``That's how rare we believe it is,'' Mr Millen said. ``We understand its origins are in Tasmania and a local collector had it for quite a few years.''
It is believed the trap had originally been used at Port Arthur to stop convicts escaping.
``But you can only speculate,'' Mr Millen said.
He said many man traps had been used in Tasmania during the convict period and many were often buried under water near Macquarie Island and Eaglehawk Neck.
Tullochs Auctions is already talking with interested parties and it expects to settle the sale by August 7.
