Police say that the yacht ran aground on the southern side of Badger Island in the Furneaux Group, just west of Flinders Island.
According to police, the yacht's Queensland skipper contacted Tamar Sea Rescue via VHF radio about 1.45am this morning, telling them that he had ran aground and required assistance.
The Tasmania Police vessel Protector III was launched from Lady Barron and located the partially submerged yacht about 5.45am with no sign of the skipper on board.
A search of the area was launched at first light by the Protector and the police rescue helicopter.
