The Pipers live at Mowbray and the two eldest children attend West Launceston Primary School and the youngest is at the pre-school.
The family is one of the 30 per cent in Tasmania, who choose to bypass their local school.
For them the reason is because they are in the rental market.
Earlier in the week the Education Department showed North-West and North principals the revised out-of-home area guidelines and map, which is aimed at bringing all schools procedures inline.
Those in the South saw their revised areas yesterday.
When the Piper family was living at Mayfield, Mrs Piper enrolled their eldest child, Theodore, 7, at West Launceston, when he started kindergarten because they intended to move into the area by the end of that year.
But due to an expensive rental market, they haven't been able to make the move.
Mrs Piper and her husband Matthew, now have a daughter, Isabella, 5, in prep and their youngest child, Lucas, 4, at the school.
``When we first enrolled our son I was really surprised the school was OK with us not living in the area yet - they were happy,'' Mrs Piper said.
``I just went to them and said we would like to be living in West Launceston by the end of the year, so it made sense for us to try and get our son in there.''
Mrs Piper said it was important parents retain the right to choose which school to send their child to and especially for them as they rented.
``I can understand why the government is doing this because they need to know where students are going but I personally think it's not fair to restrict choice,'' she said.
Tasmanian State School Parents and Friends president Jenny Eddington said some schools would see barely any change to the out-of-home area while others will and this could raise some issues.
Principals will be able to share the revised guidelines and maps with their school communities by June 12.
