Shane Anthony Burston, 46, faced the Launceston Supreme Court yesterday.
Magistrate Don Jones had previously convicted and fined Burston $300 after he pleaded guilty to assault.
Police appealed against the penalty.
Yesterday Supreme Court Chief Justice Alan Blow set aside the fine and ordered Burston to do 105 hours of community service.
Chief Justice Blow said Burston had been living with his partner for three months when he became upset about Facebook messages she had received, believing she was involved with another man.
Burston headbutted the woman, before she staggered backwards, causing her lips to bleed.
Burston has been fined three times in the past for other assaults.
