Opponents far from out of the woods

NORTHERN boxing fans have the chance to see two of the state's best fighters in Olympian Jackson Woods and Commonwealth Games representative Luke Woods in action on possibly the best amateur card ever assembled for a tournament in Launceston tonight.

Luke Woods, of Latrobe, will fight in the main event of a 15-bout program taking on Hobart's Joe Corner in a 69-kilogram bout over three, two-minute rounds.

Jackson Woods is fighting a veteran Hobart boxer in Dave Eaton under the elite rule of three, three-minute rounds.

State female 60kg boxer Georgie Bailey will take on a New South Wales opponent with another NSW fighter taking on Launceston's Bailey Wells in a 36kg schoolboys' contest.

The Northern Invitational tournament is being put on by the Launceston Boxing Club, which was formed by an amalgamation at the beginning of the year of the previously separate Newstead and Prospect boxing clubs.

"We have 12 boxers and about 40 members in the club," principal boxing coach Craig Tobler said.

"And without a doubt this card is the best amateur boxing card Tasmania has had in a long time because it is very hard to get Luke and Jackson on local cards.

"It's a fantastic card from junior schoolboys all the way up to the elite of the elite."

The tournament will be held at the Australian-Italian Club at Prospect, just past the Casino roundabout on the Bass Highway. Doors open at 6pm, the first bout is 6.30pm.

Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for under 16s.
