South ends third-grade drought

SOUTH LAUNCESTON has ended a 17-year premiership drought by beating Mowbray in the NTCA third-grade grand final.

South finished its first innings at 3-240 and bowled Mowbray out for 139 at the NTCA No.2 Ground in Launceston yesterday.

Opening batsman Michael Page made 54 runs before being caught, and Alex Smith made 51 off 56 balls.

Ben Darke and Jade Murphy formed a good partnership, scoring 46 and 40 respectively.

South coach Ben Austen said the win was due to several factors, particularly a good performance in the field.

Medium pacemen Andrew Nichols and Jimmy Williams each took two wickets.

Nichols had just 22 runs scored against him from nine overs.

South Launceston's first-grade side will face Westbury this Saturday at the NTCA Ground in the A-grade grand final.
