Vandals damage rowing shells

Vandals have caused $30,000 damage overnight to a number of rowing shells being stored at Royal Park in Launceston.

Launceston Police Sergeant Andrew Hanson said it appeared a group of people had walked through the Royal Park area at about 1.10am and have pushed boats over and off storage racks, knocking over barriers and tipping rubbish bins out.

Rowing officials arriving for the Launceston and Henley Regatta this morning discovered the damage.

Sergeant Hanson said “This does not appear to be a targeted attack on specific schools or the regatta in general, but more of an act of senseless vandalism.”

Sergeant Hanson said the shells and other rowing equipment had been in a cordoned off area with security patrols conducted throughout the night.

Police have asked that anyone with information about the incident to contact them on 63363701 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
