New Supreme Court appointments

LAUNCESTON Magistrate Robert Pearce and Hobart barrister Stephen Estcourt have been appointed to the bench of the Supreme Court in Tasmania.

Attorney-General Brian Wightman announced the appointments in his reply to the Premier's state of the state address in Parliament today.

Mr Pearce and Mr Estcourt fill the gap left by the retirement this year of Chief Justice Ewan Crawford and Justice Peter Evans.

Chief Justice Crawford finished his last sittings at the Supreme Court in Launceston last month.

Justice Alan Blow has been appointed the new Chief Justice.

Launceston lawyer Simon Brown will fill Mr Pearce's role in the Launceston Magistrates Court from June 11, and Hobart barrister and former chairman of the parole board, Simon Cooper, will fill the vacancy left by Magistrate Peter Dixon's retirement in Hobart.
