100 transport workers face the axe

TASMANIAN distribution service Road Runners has gone into voluntary administration and up to 100 jobs could be lost.

Managers were today referring calls on to Hobart insolvency firm Paul Cook and Associates.

Administrator Paul Cook said Short Haul Transport, which trades as Road Runners, had been unable to pay its debts and was put into administration yesterday. It will stop trading from tomorrow.

The warehousing and courier company employs about 100 people in Launceston, Devonport and Hobart and runs about 60 vehicles.

Mr Cook said he and fellow administrator Jonathan Morrell were in discussions with a potential buyer, but said even if the company was sold it was likely a ``considerable number'' of staff would be made redundant.

``They had planned to make a number of people redundant (before going into administration) but didn't have the funds to do so,'' Mr Cook said.

There will be a creditors meeting in Hobart on March 4.
