Workers $170 a week behind mainlanders

Tasmanian workers earn, on average, almost $170 a week less than their mainland counterparts, according to the latest official figures released this morning.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, full-time adult average weekly ordinary time earnings in Tasmania increased just 2 per cent  in trend terms  over the 12 months to November 2012 to $1223.50 a week - up from $1199.40 in November 2011.

Nationally, the average wage jumped 4.8 per cent over the same period to $1393 a week in trend terms.

Workers in the public sector earned slightly more than their private sector counterparts nationally - $1489.50 a week compared with $1366 a week.
