More than $5.1 million was wagered on this year's Hobart Cup - an increase of 23 per cent on the previous year.
Racing Minister Bryan Green said today that wagering turnover on the cup passed the $5 million mark for the first time and reaffirmed interest in the state's thoroughbred racing industry.
The race was broadcast live on Sky 1 across the country, which Mr Green said was an important factor in the high turnover result.
Mr Green said he was confident this month's Launceston Cup would also attract a lot of attention with Hobart Cup winner Hurdy Gurdy Man aiming to win both races in a single year, a feat which has not been replicated since 2004 when jockey Craig Newitt won both races on Zacielo.
