Ballistics expert fronts shooting inquiry

The inquest into the police shooting of Westbury man Nicholas Whiteley has this morning heard evidence from a Hobart ballistics expert.

Sergeant Gerard Dutton, from the Tasmania Police ballistics unit in Hobart, told the Coroner's Court in Launceston that the bullet was fired from Constable Ian Blake's pistol from within  a distance of 50 to 120 centimetres from Mr Whiteley.

Sergeant Dutton said the bullet entered Mr Whiteley's body 15cm above and to the left of his belly button.

It is expected that Constable Blake will take the stand tomorrow.

The inquest continues.
