Policeman tells inquest of chaotic scene

A policeman who attended the scene of a fatal shooting has told an inquest he could not get any sense from the officer who fired the fatal shot.

The inquest into the death of Nicholas Whiteley, 21, has this morning heard from Sergeant Dean McMahon, one of the first officers to arrive at the Westbury property.

Sergeant McMahon arrived to find Constable Ian Blake crawling along the driveway.

``It was a pretty awful sight with the blood, his injuries and his emotional state,'' he said.

Sergeant McMahon said he could not make sense of what Constable Blake was saying but found another policeman standing over Mr Whiteley while paramedics tried to resusciate him.

Sergeant McMahon said he helped paramedics perform first aid but Mr Whiteley died at the scene.

Constable Blake had earlier gone to the Westbury address to help Mr Whiteley's former partner Sheena Button remove belongings from the house.

After attempting to arrest Mr Whiteley, Constable Blake sprayed him with capsicum spray. Miss Button heard the men fighting inside the house and a single gunshot.
