Dimity Nancy Brown, 20, is alleged to have stabbed 21-year-old Aidan Andrew Dawson twice to the stomach and once to the upper chest in an altercation at their Agnes Street home about 1.50am yesterday.
Inspector John Ward said Mr Dawson was alive and speaking to police when they arrived at the house, but later died despite receiving "intensive treatment" at the Launceston General Hospital.
"It would appear that the two persons involved have had some sort of heated exchange and a physical altercation, and as a result the male person was stabbed three times," Inspector Ward said.
He said a small knife was seized by police and forensic investigators were examining the couple's home.
Inspector Ward said Ms Brown was charged after being interviewed by police yesterday morning.
He described the incident as a tragedy.
The pair had an been in an on-off de- facto relationship for more than two years, and had a child together.
Shocked neighbours described them as a "nice young family".
"They are both nice people ... it's too young, too young to die," neighbour Tracey Ford said.
Ms Ford said the tight-knit George Town community was reeling from the news.
"When something goes wrong, the community will pull together for each other," she said.
Ms Brown appeared in an out-of- hours court last night and was remanded in custody until tomorrow.
