According to police, the collision between the man's Harley Davidson motorcycle and a silver Toyota Corolla hatchback, driven by a 60-year-old woman from Virginia in the US, happened about 11.30am.
Police say that the motorcycle had been following the Toyota and attempted to overtake the hatchback, which had started turning into a nursing home driveway.
The motorcycle struck the front of the hatchback and the rider was thrown into the roadway.
He was taken to the Launceston General Hospital in a serious condition.
The female driver of the Corolla and her 58-year-old male passenger, also from the US, were not injured in the crash.
