The five females - which includes two youths - have been charged with stealing and will appear in the Launceston Magistrates Court at a later date.
Police say that the recovered property includes clothing, manchester, electrical items and hardware.
“Investigations by police culminated in the return of (allegedly) stolen property to at least eight businesses, including over $1000 worth of items from one Launceston CBD store," Senior Constable Angela Robinson said.
Police allege that the thefts were premeditated, with the females using an empty pram covered in a blanket to conceal the stolen items as the offenders left the shops.
Constable Robinson said it was a timely reminder for stores to update their security procedures.
"With the reduced cost of good quality systems, it is worth considering the installation of security cameras which can help police identify offenders and deter would-be thieves," she said.
Anyone with information about stolen property can call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward.
