LAUNCESTON College principal Keith Wenn will start the school year in hospital after the car he was co-piloting crashed during Targa Wrest Point on Sunday.
Targa spokesman Ian Chesterman said Mr Wenn was navigating for Windermere man Graeme Pitt when their 2001 Mitsubishi Lancer crashed into a tree on the 11th stage of the race, near Cygnet.
``It is just one of those things that happen in motor sports and unfortunately they have come off worse for wear,'' Mr Chesterman said.
Mr Wenn was taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital with a fractured pelvis and remains in hospital in a stable condition.
Mr Pitt was not injured.
Tasmanian Academy general manager Graeme Young said assistant principal Dianne Freeman welcomed Launceston College students back to school yesterday and would be acting principal until Mr Wenn returned to work.
Mr Chesterman said Mr Wenn had raced in Targa for several years.
