Grass fire controlled at Symmons Plains

FIREFIGHTERS are mopping up a grass fire that burnt 10 acres of cropping land on a farm at Symmons Plains today.

The fire on Symmons Plains Farm started about 11.40pm and burnt in crop stubble, destroying one farm vehicle before spreading to some nearby pine trees.

Longford fire brigade chief Mike Armstrong said firefighters were able to bring the fire under control quickly with the help of six fire trucks from Longford, Evandale, Epping Forest and Perth, but swirling winds created some difficulty.

Heavy machinery was brought in to knock out some pine trees that are still burning.

Mr Armstrong said the cause of the fire had not yet been determined but it appeared to be accidental.
