Bragging rights on the line

NORTHERN cricket fans have a great day's cricket to look forward to on Monday when the NTCA and TCL representative teams clash for bragging rights in a Twenty20 match that doubles as a Tasmanian Bushfire Appeal fund-raiser.

The game gets under way at 2pm at the NTCA No. 1 Ground, with a celebrity match being played as a curtain-raiser from noon.

``We have confirmed Geoff Lyons and Andrew Nikolic, Michael Ferguson and Peter Gutwein, with Tony Benneworth coming along to umpire the game,'' NTCA president Paul Clarke said.

``We couldn't get any Tasmanian players confirmed because the Tigers and second XI will both be away.

``We also have a state over-60s intrastate tri-series  match on the NTCA No. 2 Ground, which starts at 10am and goes through till 5pm, to select their state side to travel to the mainland.''

Clarke said the representative match between the North's two main cricket associations could be a first and definitely had not happened in the past 15 years.

``I approached the TCL with the idea to team up for the bushfire appeal and make a really good day of it,'' he said.

``There is a fair bit of hardened rivalry out there with quite a few former NTCA players now playing TCL and, after Trevallyn beat Riverside the other night, they're confident they are more than competitive with our guys.

``Our team is keen to win and we expect a good, competitive game.''

The Launceston Cricket Club will run the bar and the NTCA is putting on the barbecue and a raffle with all profits donated to the Red Cross bushfire fund.

There will be activities for the kids about 10am with a batting and catching competition. Entry is by gold coin donation.

THE NTCA REPRESENTATIVE SIDE:  John Le Fevre (Mowbray), Chris Hay (South Launceston), Dane Anderson (Westbury), Liam Reynolds (Mowbray), Sean Stevenson (Westbury), Matthew Battle (Westbury), Liam Johnson (George Town), Tom Hay (Riverside), Gabe Bell (George Town), Ryan Lees (Launceston), James Storay (Mowbray), Rohan Pooley (George Town) coach.
