Premier Lara Giddings said the financial assistance, which was distributed to affected residents, businesses and community groups, was in addition to the $5 million raised so far by the Red Cross Appeal Fund.

"It is now important to recognise the need to get money flowing quickly to residents who lost property or were displaced by fire to cover the cost of everything from buying new clothes and essential items, to securing temporary accommodation," Ms Giddings said.

To date, more than $6.7 million in Disaster Recovery Payments have been paid by the federal government since January 5.

These payments include $1000 per eligible adult and $400 per eligible child.

Emergency Assistance Grants of up to $750 per family, were enacted just one day after the bushfires started, Ms Giddings said.

"So far $400,000 has been paid to over 1300 permanent resident households," she said.

"Beyond cash payments, the State Government is providing a range of other assistance to help communities get back on their feet."
