Folk duo to play garden concert in album's honour

TEN years of a musical marriage will begin touring Tasmania next week, under the guise of folk duo Frencham Smith.

The duo - Australian singer- songwriters Fred Smith and Liz Frencham - is lapping the country to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of its first release, Into My Room.

First on Frencham Smith's Tassie touring schedule is a dusk performance in Launceston, where the pair will play in a garden picnic setting at Riverside next week.

"We find that our music and our listeners are better suited to an outside performance - as opposed to maybe a bar or an RSL club," Smith said.

"We'll play outside, in theatres and one of our favourites is in living rooms ... people are often surprised at the intimacy and energy they get from a show in a house setting."

Smith described the duo's music as storytelling.

"We've been collaborating for a long time and (Frencham and I) have a very understanding relationship," Smith explained.

"We put a lot of time in together organising these concerts and then a lot of time in the car together getting to them ... it's a marriage, of sorts."

Smith has made a name for himself bringing the stories of war that he had witnessed first- hand on peacekeeping missions in Papa New Guinea and Afghanistan.

On his latest album, Dust of Uruzgan, Smith said he wrote two songs from the point of view of Afghan women - tracks which Frencham chimes in on.

The collaboration is set to continue on to Devonport on February 1 and Brookfield Winery at Margate on February 2.TOUR DATES: Frencham Smith Into My Room Tasmanian tour dates: LAUNCESTON: Thursday, January 31 from 6pm; a garden picnic and concert at a private Riverside garden.
