Thomas adds Northern title to state honours

EAST Launceston bowler Joe Thomas took out the 2013 Bowls North under-18 men's singles championship played at West Launceston yesterday.

Thomas defeated his Trevallyn opponent Michael Sims 21-14, over 21 ends.

Thomas continued the good form that saw him win the Bowls Tasmania state under-18 title a couple of weeks ago.

Sims gained some consolation for his defeat with the announcement yesterday by Bowls Australia of his inclusion in the national junior boys' team for the trans-Tasman series in March.

``The tournament was played on good greens and it was an exciting final,'' Bowls North president Tony Benneworth said after yesterday's game.

``Joey has now added the Northern title to his state title and that . . . is a magnificent effort.

``One of the remarkable things about the tournament was that we had three pairs of twin brothers competing with Joey and his younger brother Noki, Michael and his little brother Loch and the other brothers were Mitchell and Kane Walker.''

A total of 18 bowlers contested the championship.
