Chance cannabis find for police

POLICE assisting firefighters to control a bushfire near Bridport got more than they bargained for last week, unearthing a bumper cannabis crop.

George Town police Inspector John King said police stumbled across three compounds full of Indian hemp while helping out at the Curries River fire.

"It was a reasonably sophisticated set-up, with irrigation and pumps," Inspector King said.

"The plants ranged from three- to seven- foot high and around 137 plants were seized."

The compounds were found in the Tippogoree Hills Forest Reserve.

Inspector King said police were still investigating the find.

Tasmania is in the middle of its bush cannabis growing season, which runs from September to March.
