Fire help similar to 1967

BRIDGENORTH fire brigade chief David Wright remembers cutting hay as a boy to help farmers affected by the 1967 bushfires and  yesterday he did it again  in response to last week's blazes.

Mr Wright and his fellow volunteers cut and baled two semi-trailer loads of 25-kilogram square bales, in response to a request from a Southern farmer for stock feed. The feed will today  be transported by Cressy Transport and Cranes Combined to fire-affected Ellendale, near Hobart.

``When I was five or six in 1967, the local community (at Sidmouth) took four truckloads down to Hobart,'' he said .

``I remember stacking it on to the trucks. It is something that we did then and it's a similar situation now.

``So I thought I could chuck a few blokes together and help someone out.''

The hay came from a property belonging to the estate of AJ Lack and Sons.
