Top coach puts junior players to the test

TIS head basketball coach Justin Schueller put about 120 of the state's best junior players through an intensive camp this weekend at Launceston's Elphin Sports Centre, in preparation for an interstate tournament in Victoria later this week.

Schueller is taking 12 teams to the Australian Country Cup tournament to be held in Albury from January 11 to 20.

``The Country Cup is basically a national championship for all the country associations in each state, so we are playing Victoria Country, South Australia and New South Wales Country,'' Schueller said.

``We have two boys and girls teams in each age group of under 14, under 16 and under 18.

``They are kids from all over Tasmania and the starting point of our high-performance pathway.''

Schueller said the three-day camp included working on offensive and defensive structures and educating the athletes on the Tasmanian-style of play that was modelled on the national team's playing style.
