Three-year-old girl burnt in camp fire

A THREE-year-old girl was flown to the Royal Hobart Hospital last night after being badly burnt in a camp fire.

Senior Constable Josh Peach said the girl fell into the fire on Maria Island about 7pm last night and suffered serious burns to her back.

He said the girl could not be winched aboard the Westpac Police Rescue Helicopter and had to be taken to a nearby boat.

``We located the site but we couldn't land there, so we were able to get the paramedic and his gear out on some rocks about 100 metres from the campsite,'' Senior Constable Peach said.

``He treated her while we landed about a kilometre away.''

The girl was taken to hospital in her serious condition, accompanied by her father.

It was the third operation by the rescue helicopter in two days after two people were transported to hospital for medical emergencies on New Years Eve.
