Ockerby too strong for carnival king

ULVERSTONE'S Luke Ockerby put an end to the Glenn O'Shea show in the last event on the Coastal Christmas carnival cycling program.

Fresh from completing his grand slam of wheel wins, O'Shea was targeting his fourth A-grade scratch race title of the week and put in a huge solo effort with three laps to go in the 10,000-metre, 22-lap race.

O'Shea and fellow scratchman Shane Archbold caught the four-man breakaway of Ockerby, fellow North- West Coaster Aaron Jones and South Australians Joshua Harrison and Callum Scotson.

However, Ockerby blasted to victory, and Archbold added another second place to his finish in the wheel with Scotson third.

Malaysian Afig Othman had dominated the earlier finals, winning the 1000m in 1:03.14 from compatriot Firdaus Zonis and Tasmanian Roy Martin, and coming second in the 2000m won by Tasmanian Will Holmes in 2:13.15 with Belgium's madison world champion Kenny De Ketele third.

Malaysia also claimed the women's 1000m, with Ju Pha Som Net adding to her wheelrace podium with victory in 1:12.05 from Tasmanians Georgia Baker and Janelle Smith.
