Resignation of architect: another plan gone wrong

18 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
THE resignation of state architect Peter Poulet highlights perfectly why the state government is in such a financial mess.

This is not a criticism of Mr Poulet in any way, it is a criticism of a government that created a job and has wasted probably $1 million of our money.

The state architect's position was created in 2009 and this year the state government allocated $260,000 for the role.

Nearly two weeks ago the same state government axed the Hospital in the Home program, which cost $175,000 statewide for a year, helped 94 people stay out of hospital and freed up hospital beds.

You may well ask why Tasmania needed a state architect.

In his resignation story last week Mr Poulet said, ``In the first instance people didn't know what to expect from the role and now it's about fine-tuning.''

He added, ``I tended to be Hobart focused to be honest. I got swallowed up by the people here and I'd like to see the role focused on the whole of Tasmania.''

Hang on a minute. Surely whoever created this role in the first place gave Mr Poulet a job description that included expectations and also a statewide brief.

He was, after all, the state architect - not the Hobart architect.

It is symptomatic of this government's Hobart-centric public service mentality.

In 2008 it was identified that we couldn't afford the 28,500 public servants we already employed.

So, what did this government do? - increase it by about 3000, including a state architect.

The Premier and her cabinet can continue to claim they are the financial martyrs of Tasmania with their austerity cuts.

If they hadn't tried to spend their way back into power we wouldn't be in such a mess.

We wish Mr Poulet a safe trip back to Sydney this week to be reunited with his family.

And, without trying to offend him, hopefully he will go down in history as Tasmania's first and last state architect.
