Gordon Wood guilty of murdering Caroline Byrne

21/11/2008 12:13:00 PM
Gordon Wood faces life in jail after a jury today found him guilty of the murder of his 24-year-old girlfriend Caroline Byrne.

The verdict brings to an end one of the most sensational murder trials in the state's history.

Wood was remanded until November 27 for sentencing.

Caroline Byrne's father, Tony, shook hands with detectives who were flanking him in the front row of the court.

Wood's mother Brenda, sitting with his two sisters Jacqueline and Michelle, burst into tears upon hearing the verdict.

Caroline Byrnes' former boss June Dally-Watkins, 81, described the verdict as a huge relief.

"For [Caroline's father] Anthony it must have been an incredible relief, he's persevered with it for so long.

"We all knew that Caroline would never have taken her own life. I'm really in shock now, I just have to get used to the verdict.''

Asked if the trial had taken an emotional toll on her, Ms Dally-Watkins said "every bit of it has been incredibly emotional".

Asked about the verdict, defence barrister Winston Terracini SC said a lot of the media would be very pleased because of the role they had played in securing the conviction.

Asked how Gordon was holding up he said "he's dealing with it very well. Obviously he's very disappointed with the result.''

Asked if he would appeal he said "of course we will. We'll appeal what was an unreasonable verdict".

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
