Tennis talent to serve it up with idols

04 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
LAUNCESTON tennis talent Sam Whitehead has received a surprise Davis Cup call-up at the age of nine.

Australia officially named its team for next week's Asia-Oceania Group 1 first round tie against China as Lleyton Hewitt, Bernard Tomic, Matt Ebden and Chris Guccione, but the Scotch Oakburn student will also be playing his part.

Whitehead and Tristan Lynch, 11, of Hobart, both received invites from Tennis Australia to attend a high-performance training camp based around next week's tie on grass at Geelong.

The program will see the youngsters meet their idols and pick up tips on how they prepare for matches.

``I'm very excited,'' Whitehead said as he warmed up at Launceston's regional tennis centre this week.

``I was amazed when I heard I was selected. It's a great opportunity to learn how to train.

``They will be pushing us really hard and it will be fairly hot there so I'm expecting it to be pretty tough.''

Coached by Ken Hiskins, Whitehead has only been playing tennis for 16 months but wants to take the interest as far as possible.

``It should be cool to meet the players,'' said the right-hander who was excited about the prospect of being introduced to Australian Open stars Hewitt and Tomic but admitted his favourite player was losing finalist Rafael Nadal.
