Masters weekend a success

04 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
THE Northern Tasmanian Softball Association hosted a great weekend of masters softball last week.

With 16 teams, more than 60 games, 130 umpiring commitments and over 300 people attending, the weekend was hailed a great success.

Supported by the Tasmanian government through Event Tasmania, the tournament attracted teams from Victoria and all over Tasmania.

The masters men's grand final was won by Hobart's Dragons who defeated the Ulverstone Misfits 7-6 in a very close game.

Ulverstone's Redbacks went back to back in division 1 with a win over the STSA Old Black Chicks in a very close game, with final scores being 5-4.

STSA won the right to go into the final after an unexpected preliminary final win over the Launceston Sharks. Sharks had held the second spot on the ladder well clear of STSA, but a good run innings saw STSA defeat the more fancied Sharks 10-6.

Division 2 was a tough contest between Burnie and Victorian team Vicsens, with Vicsens taking out the final.

In division 3, Launcestons Recycle Relics and Wynyard tough it out the final with Wynyard winning 13-4.

An open men's division was also included in the tournament, with the Melbourne Giants too strong for the Ulverstone Zodiacs winning 11-4.

The local roster hits off today after the Christmas break.

Senior games see Eagles Blue hosting the double header against clubmate Eagles Gold with Saints to follow at 3.30pm.

Blue has shown great improvement before the break and is on the verge of securing its first win for the season.

The junior roster begins with Saints hosting the double-header, playing the Eagles Boys at 9am and Eagles Girls at 11am.

All the junior teams are very close in the competition and evenly matched so all games will be provide heaps of excitement.
