Olympic hopefuls join hundreds at lake

STATE pennant 5 of the Rowing Tasmania regatta series attracted one of the highest quality fields in men's rowing outside a national championship to Lake Barrington yesterday.

A combined field of about 500 rowers competed across all age groups from junior to over 70s in the series.

In yesterday's racing, the Tamar Rowing Club women's crew knocked off Buckingham in the senior coxless four for the first time this season with crew members Ciona Wilson and Stephanie Williams also comfortably taking out the women's under-23 double.

Huon's Eleni Kalimnios beat Williams by a length in the women's senior single scull.

The Huon women's eight defeated Tamar by half a length in a closely-contested race with Buckingham finishing third.

Scotch Oakburn had a good day with Chloe Ranicar winning the women's under-19 single scull in a close race from New Norfolk's Georgia Parry.

Scotch Oakburn was also successful in taking out the division 2 women's eight.

Tamar's Sam Hall and Oli Lindsay won the men's under-23 pair quite comfortably from the Huon brothers Max and Eric Rowan.

The men's under-23 single scull saw Buckingham's Max McQueeney defeat Mersey's Taylor Wilczynski, with Huon's Wilson Mure a close third- only a boat's length separating the three.

Australian crews attending an Olympic pre-selection camp at Lake Barrington were on display in the senior rowing.

Tasmania's Anthony Edwards and Sam Beltz took out the men's senior pair from their Australian lightweight four crew mates of Todd Skipworth and Ben Cureton.

The senior coxless quad scull saw the Australian heavyweight world championship gold medallist crew of James McCrae, Ben Noonan, Carsten Forsteling and Chris Morgan beat a lightweight quad crew of Tom Gibson, Ali Foot, Richard Giblin and Oli Lindsay by half a length.

The pennant continues with a second day of racing today.
