Titles could go down to the wire

15 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
THE first day of round robin matches in the Australian junior darts teams championship were played at Launceston's St Ailbes Hall yesterday.

The titleholder is Western Australia in the girls and Queensland in the boys' competition, having won the titles in Victoria last year.

In the girls, Queensland is the hot favourite to take out the title with two rounds to go.

It is the only team that has not lost a round.

Western Australia, the defending titleholder, was defeated by South Australia in round 3 to put its defence in doubt.

South Australia lost first up to New South Wales, but is still in contention if it can win its last two matches against Queensland and Victoria.

The whole girls' competition could come down to the last match when Western Australia plays Queensland. If Western Australia wins a tie-breaker maybe required to separate the two teams.

If Queensland wins, it will win the title.

In the boys competition after four rounds Queensland is on track to defend its title.

It has a testing day ahead of it, with two big matches.

Queensland and Victoria have both won all their matches, and Western Australia is lurking quietly with just one loss and will play a big part in deciding who will win the title.

The first crunch match will be round 6 when either Queensland or Victoria will lose a match.

Queensland also has to play Western Australia in round 7.

If Queensland defeats Victoria, and Western Australia defeats Queensland, all of which is possible, it could see a three team tie-breaker to find the champion.

Tasmania and South Australia may also want to have a say in how this all pans out - the teams are evenly matched.

Competition continues today from 10am.
