HISTORIC road racer Paul Smith is ready to defend the title he won on his return to competitive road racing last year after a 30-year hiatus.
But the Legana rider is unlikely to have things all his own way in Sunday's season opener.
He scored points in all but one race last year to finish 30 points clear of Steve Badcock, of Hagley, who failed to score in two races.
But Launceston's Peter McCormack would appear to be the man to beat this year after finishing nine points behind Smith, despite missing the four races of the first round and failing to finish in one of the final-round races.
Things are clearer in the 600 and unlimited class where Hobart's Brett Simmonds won all but one race last year, beating Devonport's Brad Wootton, who triumphed in that race and claimed second in all the others.
Scottsdale rider Craig Johnston has made the up-to-500 class his own for the past few years and it will be interesting to see if last year's second-placed Peter Booth, of Westbury, can find the extra pace needed to dethrone Johnston.
The 125GP category looks set for a revival after Launceston rider Laurence Gude's walk-in-the-park championship win last year.
Gude came first or second in each race he contested - his consistency earning him the championship.
Clint Clarke, of Trevallyn, finished 100 points adrift, at least in part courtesy of the five races he either did not start or did not finish.
Launceston father and son Michael and Nathan Greene are determined to contest the full season this year after last season finishing third and fourth respectively.
Spectators are welcome, racing starts at 9am, admission is free and a kiosk and coffee van will operate all day.
