V8 champs on a roll for richest race

02 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
THE nation's best V8 speedway super sedan racing talent heads to Latrobe again this weekend for Australia's richest speedway sedan event, the $45,000 Latrobe Grand Prix tomorrow and Saturday night.

For the past two weeks, Tasmania has played host to three rounds of the National Super Sedan Series at Carrick and Latrobe, plus the Tasmanian Grand National in Hobart last weekend.

The four big meetings have produced four different winners and the field is so competitive that a fifth different winner is entirely on the cards.

National series round winners Dave Gartner, of South Australia (Carrick winner), former Tasmanian champion Brad Smith, of Devonport (Latrobe) and Queensland's Wayne Randall (Carrick), plus Tasmanian Grand National winner Lachlan Onley, of New South Wales, will all be keen to add the country's richest V8 super sedan prize to their recent victories.

However, reigning Australian champion Steve Jordan, of Queensland, has finished second in all three national series rounds and the former Launceston driver is keen to break through for a win.

Jordan came close in Hobart last weekend, but was sent to the rear of the grid by officials after his unsuccessful passing attempt for the lead brought race leader Darren Kane unstuck.

Damage to Kane's car from the incident, also put the former Hobart driver, out of the race, with the former Australian champion also fired up for a win this weekend in his former home state.

Former two-time Australian champion Kevin Purton, of Deloraine, also failed to finish in Hobart last week and will be out to make amends this weekend, as will six-time Tasmanian champion David Nichols, of Launceston, who suffered a similar fate.

Current Tasmanian champion Jarrod Harper, of Hellyer Beach, has had a horrid run with engine dramas over the past fortnight and will hopefully put that all behind him as he chases his fourth grand prix victory.

Saturday night's racing in the grand prix will also double as round six of the Statewide Super Sedan Series, with Tasmanian drivers keen to gain valuable points in their own domestic series.

The action will blast off with nine heats of the grand prix tomorrow night, with six more to follow on Saturday, plus the Neville Harper Memorial Pole Shuffle and the all-important 50-lap final, which carries with it $100 a lap for the leader, meaning a $5000 bonus for any driver who leads from start to finish.

Racing for the karts tomorrow will start at 5pm, with the main program getting under way at 7pm.

Saturday's support programme will feature round seven of the Statewide Street Stock Sedan Series, plus racing for lightning sprints, Tassie sixes, and speedway karts, with racing for the karts from 4pm. The main event starts at 6pm.
