Motorcycle legend set to rev up CAMS awards

28 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
MOTORCYCLE champion and Tasmanian Motor Sport Hall of Fame inductee Malcolm Campbell will be the special guest at the CAMS Tasmanian Motor Sports awards presentation to be held at the Launceston Country Club on Saturday, March 3.

Campbell started racing at 16 and within two years ventured to the mainland where he was placed against top competition in graded racing.

Over the following seasons Campbell enjoyed significant success in production bike racing at state and national level before securing a factory ride.

In 1981 he came to prominence by winning the prestigious New Zealand six-hour endurance race and in the years that followed was invited to race in Superbike events in Asia and Europe.

As a Team Honda Australia lead rider Campbell was recognised by Honda Japan and was invited to test new revolutionary and technologically advanced bikes on a number of instances.

From the mid-1980s to the early-1990s Campbell competed in limited rounds of the World Superbike and 500cc Grand Prix championship with distinction and while he wasn't able to secure a full-time ride with a factory team in the premier class there were many who felt he had the talent and could have made the grade if given the chance.

During his outstanding career Campbell won three Australian Superbike championships, an Australian Castrol six-hour production bike race, the New Zealand equivalent, an Australian Grand Prix, a Malaysian Grand Prix, the Swann International series (beating world champion Wayne Gardner), an Australian endurance championship and two Australian Road Racing championships.

He also placed in numerous national and international championships, scoring many pole positions and lap records.

As a further indication of his outstanding career Campbell became the first motorsport person to be inducted into the Tasmanian Sporting Hall of Fame.

After retiring from competitive racing Campbell maintained his involvement in the sport as an active member of the Tasmanian Motor Cycle Club, particularly mentoring at clinic days and guiding riders to be safer on the road.

In recent years Campbell has become involved in Historic motorcycle racing as a competitor and still has the desire to have a go.

Anyone wishing to attend the dinner should contact Dennis Burgess at the CAMS office in Hobart on 62275601.

Bathurst 12-hour race

THREE Tasmanians will be competing in the Bathurst 12-hour race to be run on the last weekend in February with John Bowe a possibility for outright victory.

Bowe will drive a brand new Ferrari 458 GT3 for Maranello Motor Sport with Allan Simonsen, Dominik Farnbacher and Peter Edwards and was very happy with the car after a test session at Phillip Island on Wednesday.

``It's incredibly impressive, with a massive amount of grip compared to the Mustang I drive in the Touring Car Masters series,'' Bowe said.

``I don't know how else to put it, it's great to drive, comfortable and has unquestionable performance and it's a very well thought out race car,'' the two-time Bathurst 1000 winner said.

For the outright honours there is a second Ferrari in the field as well as two Lamborghinis, three Audi R8 LMS cars, one of which will be driven by Craig Lowndes, two Mercedes Benz SLS AMGs and a lone Mosler MT900.

In class C for GT4 cars Adam Gowans will drive a Lotus Exige S with Richard Meins and Chris Lillington-Price while reigning Commodore Cup champion Adam Beechey will line up with Tony Alford and Peter Leemhuis in a Nissan R35 GTR.
