Gartner, a former Australian street stock sedan champion, won one of his heats and scored two seconds, but signalled what was to come in the final when he stormed through the field to finish second in heat six, after starting from grid seven.

Reigning Australian champion and Launceston-born driver Steve Jordan, of Queensland, was equally impressive on Leg 1his former home track with a first, a second and a third from his three heats, with his victory in heat five coming after an impressive drive from grid seven, to join Gartner on the front row for the final.

Launceston's Sam Hughes, ninth in the series before last night, qualified on grid three, with New South Wales charger Lachlan Onley joining him on the front row.

Former Tasmanian champion Brad Smith, of Devonport, and former Australian champion Mick Nicola, of Victoria occupied the third row, with Tasmanian drivers Steve Latham, of Hobart, and reigning Tasmanian champion Jarrod Harper, of Hellyer Beach, also qualifying in the top 10.
