Big program to mark end of Tasmanian leg of super sedan

25 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM

THE Tasmanian leg of the National Super Sedan Series ends at Carrick Speedway tonight with a big midweek program for the eighth round of the 11-round series.

With only three more rounds to follow in Western Australia in March, the Carrick round could be critical.

The two Tasmanian rounds to date at Carrick last Friday and Latrobe on Saturday have produced victories for South Australia's Dave Gartner and Devonport's Brad Smith, who are currently fourth and third respectively in the series.

No doubt drivers would be aiming to repeat their success, although Garner fared worse at Latrobe when Smith won, compared to Smith's third on Friday behind Gartner, probably making the former Tasmanian champion the favourite tonight.

Reigning Australian champion and series leader Steve Jordan, from Queensland, has been super consistent and finished second in both rounds and the former Launceston driver would love to wrap-up the Tasmanian leg of the series with a victory on his former home track.

Former Australian champion Darren Kane, also from Queensland, is currently second in the series and led Jordan before the start of the Tasmanian triple and will be fired up to regain the series lead.

Kane, originally from Hobart, is also a former four-times Tasmanian champion and will also be keen to perform well in front of family and friends in the crowd.

In fact, Kane is one of eight drivers in the top 10 with Tasmanian connections.

Also in the top 10 are current Tasmanian champion Jarrod Harper, of Hellyer Beach, former state champion Steve Latham, of Hobart, former six-times Tasmanian champion David Nichols, of Launceston, fellow Launceston driver Sam Hughes, and Queensland driver Wayne Randall, who is driving a car owned and prepared in Launceston by Steve Jessup.
