Rain dampens Classic rollout

31 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
PERSISTENT rain along the North-West caused havoc to the opening day of the $17,000 Penguin Classic Pairs bowls tournament yesterday.

The weather interrupted sectional play at the Penguin, Burnie, South Burnie, Turners Beach and Ulverstone rinks.

Organisers intend to extend today's program which will see bowlers play four games instead of three in an effort to catch up.

With so many interstate bowlers competing organisers are desperate for the tournament to finish on Thursday so as not to disrupt travel plans.

Despite the rain yesterday only one team from the 120 pairs entered decided to withdraw.

The tournament was officially opened by Phil Sidney, of Roadways, at Penguin yesterday morning.
