THE Northern bowling pair of Tony Benneworth and Simon Morrison were among the big winners on the second day of the $17,000 Penguin Classic.
After rain interrupted the opening day on Monday, improved conditions yesterday allowed the tournament to go ahead as scheduled and there were some brilliant bowls played in sectional play at Penguin, Burnie, South Burnie, Turners Beach and Ulverstone.
Benneworth and Morrison combined to win five games at Penguin and finished the day 46 shots up.
Benneworth, a former first class cricketer for Tasmania, is now making his mark in bowls and his partner Simon Morrison was recently appointed as the state's community development officer.
At Turners Beach the pair of Greg Douce and David Gamble won four games in their section to finish with 42 shots.
The composite pair of former top sportsmen Wayne Manson and Grant Alford also won four games and ended 37 shots up.
The father and son combination of Bob and Chris Bye, of Sandy Bay, also advanced to today by winning four games and 25 shots.
Visiting Queenslanders Barry Ward and Gary Groeger made their presence felt in sectional play at Ulverstone.
