McKay, McDougall earn finals' berth

30 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
FRED McKay and Rhys McDougall survived two tie-break ends in their march to the final of the Northern men's open pairs.

Chris Dudman and Rohan Donohue fought hard and came from behind to draw level on the 21st end, but were unable to stop the McKay combination advancing to the semi-final.

Paul West and Robin Webb were the next to qualify with an eight-shot victory over David Quarrell and Tullah Redman.

Leon Allen and Luke Patterson also qualified by defeating Sam and Will Springer.

Luke Patterson and Peter Zoon traded blows, keeping the scores close for the first 10 ends, where a minor lapse in the intensity in the heat gave Nathan Chugg and Peter Zoon the biggest lead of the game.

The Zoon combination stretched its lead in the closing stages to move into the final.

Robin Webb and Paul West never gave in to the McKay combination in the fight for the next finals' berth.

McDougall and McKay established an early lead but were unable to maintain the gap. West drew level on many occasions with some great conversions.

McKay held the advantage on the scoreboard with just one bowl to go when West played the perfect bowl to convert the head for three and force a tie-breaker.

McDougall and McKay held the advantage after the first four bowls, which they maintained to go to the final by just a single shot.

The final will be played at North Launceston on Sunday, February 5.
