In-form Burnie takes top spot

29 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
BURNIE has moved to the top of the Coastal bowls Premier League ladder with a resounding 54 shot whitewash of Devonport yesterday.

The Tigers won on all rinks with Sam McLean, Colin Ramsden, David Gewin and youngster Taelyn Male giving state skip Adam White a real bowls lesson winning 34-11.

Mark Nitz won 30-14 over Garry Courtney and Paul Harman was nine up on Tim Douce.

Leon Webb suffered one of his rare defeats going down to Tony Simpson 21-27. Latrobe shared the rinks with Turners Beach but ran out easy 21 shot winners.

The Diehards had Colin Griffiths, Murray Skirving, Aaron Mus and Mathew Freshney in fine form as they demolished Ken Hamilton by 18.

Greg Douce continued his good season with a 32-24 victory over Colin Willcox.

Tim Dwyer and Barry Hill both recorded narrow victories for the Beach. Penguin with Ricky Richardson, Ben Cornick, Trevor Docking and Greg Perry returning to the form they displayed before Christmas easily accounted for East Devonport 116-75.

Tim Arnold did his best to counter Richardson s big win with a 34-16 shot defeat of Wayne Willcox but it was to no avail as Wayne Manson and Russell Cornwall both recorded big wins for the Two Blues.

Ulverstone consolidated its position in the four with a three rink 31 shot defeat of Wynyard.

Rodney Horton made sure of the win for the Robins with his 37-17 against Bob Mayfield.

It will take some upset results from here on in if the top four is to change but positional changes within the group is quite on the cards.

In division 1 Latrobe moved further ahead on top of the ladder with its 13 shot defeat of Port Sorell. Eddie Bugg, Scott Hingston, Graeme Monson and Tod Wheldon were the big winners for Latrobe with their 33-20 shot margin over Michael Castles.

Smithton was delighted to record its second win of the season when they finished too strong for South Burnie and Devonport finished 13 in front of Devonport. Railton returned to the winners list by defeating Wynyard 95-82.

Division 2 saw cellar dweller South Burnie get over Spreyton's Ian Moore, Ricky Sheehan and Phillip Atkins but could not get over Alan Carver who won 37-11 over George Malley to give the Eagles a nine shot win despite losing the other three rinks.

Turners Beach with Ian Zantuck, Bill Price, Darren Templar and Dale Simmonds leading the way defeated Ridgley and in doing so kept itself within shooting distance of a final four finish. Penguin as expected was much to strong for Burnie winning 117-84.

Kevin White, Ernie Ling, Tony Johnson and Harry Evans were on fire winning 44-10 against Graeme Hammond. The win puts Penguin two games clear on top and looking rather like premiership material.

Sheffield put it all together in its game against Devonport in division 3 winning on all rinks by a massive 45 shots.

There is now only 18 shots between the top five teams in this division and clubs will need to make every post a winner from here on in.

Ulverstone caused an upset by thrashing Wynyard 110-70 and Penguin snuck in by eight against South Burnie. Port Sorell held onto second spot by defeating Ridgley.
