Favourites remain elusive in close pennant seasons

27 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
We are at round 14 of Northern pennant and with two thirds of the season gone most of the ladders have no clear favourites.

The Trevallyn and Deloraine Challenger League game this week has been postponed because of the death of Tommy Donohue.

The game will be organised between the clubs to be played at a later date.

North Launceston has a good points break over Kings Meadows in Mitsubishi Challenger League, holding the top two spots.

Longford, Deloraine and Trevallyn are still close and all have a chance of being in the first round of finals.

With a washout recorded in round seven, this is the first time the teams will have met.

North Launceston and Launceston meet on the Seaport rink in Challenger this week.

Launceston has struggled to gain points in recent weeks. With no points last week at Cressy it will now have to fight hard to stave off relegation.

The usually reliable Kevin McLean suffered his biggest loss of the season at the hands of Kevin Wilson, a change or two may well be on the cards.

North Launceston is stacking the points away at an average of 10 a week. David Minns slipped last week but will be sure to be on the pace here for a full count.

Kings Meadows plays Longford in Tiger territory.

Kings Meadows missed the services of Andrew Baird and Daniel Hollingsworth last week in their clash with Trevallyn, with Fred McKay scoring their only points.

They need to be back to full strength this week to contain the Longford side.

The reigning premier has shown promise in early games and can never be discounted; Simon Zaporozec and Mark Strochnetter can be game-changers if the opportunity presents.

The country kids from Cressy meet the hilltop boys at East Launceston.

Just seven points separates these two sides with Cressy full of confidence after its win last week.

An all-rinks win separates Scottsdale and Cosgrove Park in division 1 as it strives to be the next team admitted to Challenger League.

Beauty Point, Bridport and Trevallyn are close at hand in third, fourth and fifth. While their positions could change, the leaders should be safe.

Trevallyn heads to the seaside and the Bridport synthetic. Eddie and Chris Walker headed the cards for Bridport at Longford last week and at home will be hard to beat.

Kings Meadows and George Town meet at George Town.

Jaymen Sutton collected Kings Meadows only points last week against Scottsdale but the synthetic at George Town may well suit.

The Longford Tigers were mauled last week by Bridport at home and will be in for an even longer day against second-placed Cosgrove Park.

Paul Cleary and Peter Lawrence head the table for Cosgrove and will be out to make amends for last week's result.

Scottsdale hosts Beauty Point in a game that should see the home team take the bulk points.

Jake Ihnen is in fine form with good support from his fellow skips, Darren Cassidy and Shane Davis.
