TASMANIAN Symphony Orchestra principal flautist Douglas Mackie will be one of 47 musicians on stage at the Symphony Under the Stars concert at Launceston's City Park on February 25 thanks to the RACT.
The annual free event, which draws a crowd of up to 8000, has been secured for the next three years with sponsorship from the RACT.
RACT's chief operating officer Craig Petterwood said it would inject $50,000 annually into the Launceston event and one in Hobart, as well as a series of concerts throughout the year.
He said its sponsorship of the event tied in with others around the state, including Festivale and Taste.
``It's a great event to come and listen to and I think the majority of people just want to come and listen to the great music in this great park,'' he said.
``We're a local Tasmanian business supporting the local Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra.''
This year's event will feature guest violinist Ji Won Kim, who is a former ABC Young Performer of the Year and has performed with orchestras throughout Australia, Europe and Asia.
The conductor for the evening will be Kenneth Young and ABC Radio's Ryk Goddard will be compere.
TSO managing director Nicholas Heyward said the event offered something for everyone.
``For many people I suppose, it's their introduction to the TSO through these concerts,'' Mr Heyward said.
``Yet there are lots of people who come anyway just because they enjoy the classical orchestra but this event will cover a range of musical works.''
Launceston Mayor Albert van Zetten said it was an important event for the city.
He said the council regarded it as one of its key events and that it was appreciated by many in the community.
