Rainbow Styling waits for flight confirmation

08 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
THE perennial problem of arranging air transport to Tasmania is the only thing worrying the connections of Hobart Cup topweight Rainbow Styling.

Otherwise, they couldn't be happier with the seven-year-old's preparation for Sunday's $225,000 race.

Rainbow Styling, part-owned by millionaire Sydney businessman and leviathan racehorse owner Nick Moraitis, is one of 10 final acceptors.

The field includes four horses from interstate, one from New Zealand and five locals.

Moraitis owns Rainbow Styling in partnership with his racing manager David Baxter, of Macquarie Stud at Wellington in New South Wales.

The gelding, a winner of eight races and $540,000, is prepared by former leading Sydney trainer John Hawkes and his sons Wayne and Michael.

Baxter said yesterday that the stable was delighted with Rainbow Styling's form this preparation and considered the 2200 metres of the Hobart Cup ``just about perfect for him at this stage''.

``But there is a little bit of a transport issue at the moment that Wayne (Hawkes) is trying to sort out,'' the owner said.

``They are trying to get a flight for him - if he can't be flown down, he won't go.

``Hopefully, everything will fall into place.''

Baxter bred Rainbow Styling and sold him as a yearling to Moraitis - best known as the owner of Might And Power - for $300,000.

``Fortunately, Nick let me buy 20 per cent back,'' Baxter said.

``He's been a good horse to us. He's relatively lightly-raced for a seven-year-old, not because he's had any problems - he's never even had a cold - but he took a long time to grow up.''

In-form Victorian jockey Dwayne Dunn, who won on Rainbow Styling at Caulfield 13 days ago, has again been booked for the ride.

The other interstate runners will be Viking Hero, to be ridden by Damien Oliver, and two horses that contested last Sunday's Jockey Club Cup, Fieldmaster (first) and Placement (third).

Adding further quality to the field is New Zealand stayer Roi D'Jeu, who was runner-up to subsequent Wellington Cup winner Six O'Clock News in the group 3 Trentham Stakes on January 21.

The local contingent is headed by the state's best stayer Geegees Blackflash and Devonport Cup winner Dream Flyer.

TAB Sportsbet, the first fixed-odds operator to post a market yesterday, has Geegees Blackflash favourite ahead of Rainbow Styling.
