POPULAR Bracknell trainer Maurie Strickland will be rewarded for his unlucky second in last month's Hobart Thousand if favourite Rewind can win today's $37,500 Devonport Greyhound Cup.
Strickland, 76, has been in greyhound racing for more than 50 years and Rewind gives him the chance to grab a major group 3 victory.
Rewind was beaten a nose in the Hobart Thousand final by Victorian Dyna Tron with that greyhound expected to be the Australian greyhound of the year.
Rewind was the fastest and most impressive heat winners at Devonport last week in a time of 25.39 and today has drawn perfectly in box eight.
Greyhound racing analyst Greg Fahey believes Rewind could start an odds-on favourite this afternoon.
``He has a near perfect record on the track winning eight of his 10 races and it would prove a very popular win as his trainer is regarded as a lovely bloke,'' he said.
Fahey rates Rewind as the best greyhound Strickland has trained, just ahead of his former top bitch Bookies Regret.
While Fahey rates Rewind on top he said there was plenty of opposition in today's race, which he described as the best Devonport Cup field he had seen in his lifetime.
``There is also Damek and Miss Roman Nose to consider along with the Victorian Classy Maldini,'' he said.
Damek has a quick winning time of 25.23 to his credit at Devonport where he has won 13 of his 14 starts.
Warragul track record holder Classy Maldini will carry the hopes of Australia's best-known greyhound trainer Graeme Bate and will jump from the red box.
After 10 years of trying, Taipan Bale gave Bate his first Devonport Cup win in 2009 and today he is after his second.
The Angus Evans Memorial is the other feature race at Devonport and Rewind's litter sister Clyde's Angel could complete a unique family double.
She has drawn the red box and beside her is another litter sister Penny's Angel with both bitches prepared by Terry Penny.
Best bet on the program should be Jethro in race five, despite him being an ordinary beginner.
