AUSTRALIA'S top greyhound trainer Graeme Bate has set Ballarat Cup winner Up And Away for the Devonport Cup, which starts today with the running of eight heats.
After 10 years of trying to win the Devonport Cup, Bate was successful in 2009 with Taipan Bale and is back to try and win it again.
Bate can expect plenty of tough local opposition in his bid to win the cup and Up And Away will contest heat 1.
The hardest for him to beat will be the Keith Nicholls-trained Portrait Ignites from the outside box.
Brilliant sprinter Damek should race his way into the final by winning heat 2, although Penny's Angel poses some threat.
Heat 3 is more open, with Clyde's Angel, Compacto and another Bate-trained greyhound Classy Maldini the best chances.
Burnie-trained Irinka Jarryd, although drawn out in box 8, looks the one to beat in heat 4, with King's View, Pretty In Blue and the veteran Stylish Monty next best.
Irinka Julia and Christmas Gift winner Ukulele Lad should fight out the finish of heat 5.
The brilliant Rewind, beaten a lip in the Hobart Thousand, is the one to beat in heat 6, with last year's cup favourite Ima Fencer, Rob Pines and youngster Jethro keeping him honest.
Heat 7 is easily the most open with Sandbanker, Where's Magpie, Awesome Naz and Centennial Bark all winning chances.
The final heat sees Miss Roman Nose, Lika Whisper and Left Seattle looking to do battle for the last spot in the final.
